On July 1st, New Genesis Baptist Church proudly introduced Rev. Kevin Dunman as its new pastor. His leadership marks a new chapter in the church’s ongoing mission to serve with faith, love, and purpose.
Our Story
New Genesis Baptist Church was founded on January 7, 2012, with its first worship service held the next day at the Fleet Reserve Center. From day one, the church included a full ministry team — choir, ministers, deacons, trustees, ushers, and administrative staff.
As the congregation grew, the church moved from the Fleet Reserve Center to the Kempsville Lake Clubhouse, and then to the Indian Lakes Community Center. Along the way, New Genesis began actively serving the community with clothing drives, holiday food baskets, scholarships, and ministries dedicated to youth, women, men, and missions.
On November 16, 2013, Rev. Melvin Cotton, Jr. was installed as pastor at Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth. Under his leadership, “The New” was born — symbolizing a fresh spirit and direction. The church launched a website, performed its first baptisms, and celebrated milestones such as Men’s Day, Youth Day, and Pastor’s Anniversary. Creative fundraising efforts like the Twelve Tribes of Israel campaign and a soul food cookbook followed.
Eventually, the church moved into its current location at 3229 MacDonald Road. In 2018, Pastor Cotton introduced the theme: “Standing on God’s Promise, Laboring for the Lord.” The church hosted its first block party, added Bible study classes, partnered with outreach centers, launched Children’s Church, and became a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Growth continued through licensed ministers, baptisms, and outreach — even amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, where faithful service remained strong.
Our Mission Continues
New Genesis Baptist Church remains committed to faith, community, and Christ-centered service. With Pastor Kevin Dunman now leading the way, the church looks forward to a bright future — building on its strong foundation and continuing to grow in God’s purpose.
